“The lack of communication from the university to the students is worthy of concern. The truth is there are many students who use the quad as a place to relax and study. Forestry students often examine the trees there and use them as examples in their projects. In a university setting, a place where one can find brief respite from an overloaded academic schedule or various other pressures is treasured. And yet, no substantive efforts were taken on the part of the administration to look for the opinion of the student body at large.
Ultimately, the attachment to the north quad is one that is more sentimental than practical, but it is still curious why the administration opted not to get the opinion of the student body in renovations that are meant to improve the overall NAU experience, much like they did with the new Health and Learning Center several years ago. While the issue of the renovations and tree removal may seem trivial to some, it does raise questions as to how connected the administration is to the student population, and without that connection, it may be difficult for them to successfully create an environment in which students can truly thrive.”

This is a snippit from an editorial posted in my university’s newspaper about the North Campus Revitalization project I recently wrote about that involves the cutting down of many old, historic trees to make that area appear more alluring.
I think a great point is made in noting how out-of-touch my school’s administration can be with its students. In all, I’m generally happy with my education here. My program isn’t the most supported, but this semester seems to be turning up. Fees are skyrocketing and parking is insane, but we all make it work.
Honestly, the root of most issues seems to be a disconnect between what students should experience and what is being spent on by the big-wigs.
It will be interesting to see how the campus community reacts to the change, if at all.
