Duke Nukem was so unappealing and dull that we quit about thirty minutes in.
There didn’t seem to be much of a plot, and I wondered a lot about why I was doing the things I was doing. You drive fall out of a duct and into a elevator shaft - you stop the elevator from falling. You direct an RC car in a separate room around a track to push a fuel cell through a slot. You shrink in size and have to drive a toy car for a solid ten minutes. Bleh. So much of it felt like arbitrary filler designed to make the game seems longer. It was uncreative.
There wasn’t a single female character who didn’t make a sexual comment. Everything you do for any girl character in the game automatically incites some kind of sexy entendre. No female was wearing much more than pants with a low-cut shirt on top. Women in this game were sexual toys, only to be impressed and by Duke’s unlikeable machismo.
The depiction of males wasn’t much better either. No one could compete with Duke’s badassness - Duke even punches one guy for complaining, and you even win an in-game badge for it. Duke obviously wins 1st place for what patriarchal media thinks every man should be. Anything short of Duke’s crass, overtly sexual and profane behavior means you’re a pussy, according to him.
Piece of junk. I’m sure it was a great series in its heyday, and perhaps even broke a few barriers for gaming, but now it seems to be a disgusting, witless, and extremely boring game.
Bravo, gaming industry.
