Girl + Computer = ?

Look at the difference between Sweden’s movie poster for “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and the one that will be released in America. Look at the difference in demeanor. Where the leading lady’s gaze is set. The body positioning and language. The gross change in clothing.

This actually pisses me off a lot.

I feel like this is a good example of how much American film craves attractive women no matter the situation. “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is not a sexy action movie. It is a dark mystery where the leading woman does not subscribe to traditional beauty standards and actively defies them, as her goal is not to be attractive.

It is also interesting to consider the differences simply between gender definition between Sweden and the United States. Some of you may have heard about the extremely liberal preschool in Sweden that banned the usage of gendered terminology for its students, opting the term “friend” over “boys and girls.” As a country that has a page on gender equality on their national government website, its not surprising that their film industry would be more willing to depict a male and female character equally rather than having the female in a submissive position.

I really care for the book, and the Swedish movie hit it right on the head for me. Although the trailer seemed interesting stylistically, I’m not convinced that the U.S. version will have quite the same heft emotionally as the Swedish version did, and part of that is because of my fear of Lisbeth becoming a sex-creature rather than an independent and interesting character.
