That was quick!!
This year, I am enrolled in five courses, 14 credit-hours - Linear Algebra, Ethics in CS, Software Engineering, Automata Theory, and Web Programming. Although 14 credit-hours isn’t as much as the average student, I feel this is an appropriate class load for me.
One thing that really bothers me now that I’m getting to upper-division coursework is how I have no idea what to expect out of my classes from the title. I’ve asked three different people about Linear Algebra, and gotten three different answers. I don’t even know what an Automaton is in terms of CS.
Understanding exactly what I’m up against in terms of coursework can be a little frightening. Its nice that at least my other CS friends are in the same boat!
Today I attended Linear Algebra (which consists of manipulating matrices, I discovered) and Ethics. I think this Ethics class will be a pleasant change of pace - we will now be forced to communicate with each other, contemplate and discuss, and write papers. As much as I love programming, it will be a nice break from the coding to read a little.
Automata Theory, Web Programming, and Software Engineering is tomorrow - all in one big block, from 9:30 am to 2 pm. Will definitely have to lunch through class. I’ll let you know what those classes will really consist of after I get done!
Despite all of the changes in my program, it sounds like everyone of importance is trying hard to make these changes positive. My ethics teacher is one of the new professors, who apparently received his Master’s degree at the end of the summer. My Web Programming class will also be taught by someone I have not heard of, so I hope this lecturer will be excited to teach us as well.
Also: I saw four different female computer science majors today. Where have you been all my life?? Hopefully I can befriend them soon!
